Tools being tested

These first versions started from Justin's own story: his tomatoes died and his peppers failed because there was no soil testing or weather advice. They are being tried in real farming before anyone else is asked to rely on them.

The two farmer tools

Farm Talk

  • Speak a farm note instead of typing it — what you planted, harvested or spent.
  • Take a photo of a plant for a best guess at pests or disease.
  • Keep simple records of money in and out, and harvest totals.
  • Get planting ideas for the season, and talk with other farmers.

Nakivale Growth Hub

  • A second first version with similar farm records and advice.
  • Built so we can compare two approaches and keep the one farmers prefer.
  • Also used as the practice project in our volunteer training.

Honest limits

  • A photo cannot measure soil. Photo advice is a best guess, not a soil test.
  • Both use a shared "farm code" so a family can open the same records. Anyone with the code can see that farm's records, so keep it within the family.
  • Neither tool is public yet. Links go only to the people testing them.
  • We will keep one tool, not both, once Justin and other farmers have used them for a season.

What we are checking

Success is simple: Justin and Ghislain use it for one growing season, and at least one planting decision changes because of it. We will post the result here — whether it worked or not.
