Build Directly

The people who live here decide what gets built

Most aid is decided far away. Build Directly turns that around: members in Nakivale say what they need, and supporters fund exactly that. Nothing for us without us.

How it works

  1. 1

A member says what is hard

People who live in Nakivale join YRUD and answer a short survey — on paper, by phone or online. They say what is hard where they live and what would help, in their own words.

  2. 2

YRUD writes it up as a request

Our team turns the answer into a plain request: the problem in the asker's words, what will be built, what it costs, and how we will know it worked. The member sees it before it goes public.

  3. 3

A supporter funds that one thing

Anyone can pick a request and fund it. The money pays for building that tool or project, not a general pot, and it is never paid to the person who asked. YRUD builds and runs it for the community. The amount recorded is shown next to the cost.

  4. 4

It is built, and everyone sees it

When it is delivered, it goes on the notice board with the date. The member who asked can follow every step from their own account.

A system built around your role

Some members get a survey written for their job — a public school teacher, a farmer, a health worker, with more to come. The questions ask about a real working week: what you keep track of by hand, which job takes the most time, what phone and power you have.

A trained YRUD volunteer can also visit you at your school, farm or clinic, ask those questions with you, and build a first version of a tool together before leaving. You get your own account to open it, try it in your real work and follow the full plan as it is built and polished here. Nothing is promised: if the first version does not help, we stop.

The role surveys and visits are new and being tried with the first teachers in Nakivale.

Join and say what would help

Give your name and, if you have one, an email. YRUD will speak with you and you can get your own account to follow your answers. Joining does not promise money, work or support — it means your voice is part of the decision.

Honest about where it stands

Build Directly is new. The first members are answering the survey now, and the first requests are still being written up. Until a request is published, it does not appear on this site.

Amounts are recorded by YRUD when money arrives. They are YRUD-documented, not audited. Questions are always welcome on the contact page.

Money given to a request pays for the tool or project YRUD builds and runs for the community. It is never paid to the person who asked.

YRUD is a Ugandan community organisation, not a US 501(c)(3). Gifts are not tax-deductible or tax-exempt.
